What Is Levitra?

For many men, erectile dysfunction is a reality that can keep them from fully enjoying life. Luckily, however, there are many different medications that are used to treat this problem, allowing men who experience erectile dysfunction to enjoy normal, healthy sex lives. One medication that has proven to be successful in treating this condition is Levitra.

What Is Erectile Dysfunction?

To fully understand how Levitra works, it's important to know how an erection occurs in a man who is not experiencing any problems. An erection is caused when the blood flow to the penis is increased. Once sexually stimulated, the arteries in the penis enlarge. The expansion of the arteries end up compressing the veins that take blood away from the penis. This in turn, slows the blood flow from the penis, and an erection occurs. With erectile dysfunction, some part of this process does not occur properly.

How Does Levitra Work?

Levitra works by increasing the flow of blood to the penis and is taken by men only when they are planning to have sex. After taking Levitra, physical or visual stimulation will allow them to achieve and maintain an erection. Even when erectile dysfunction is infrequent, Levitra can still be taken.

How Much Levitra Do Patients Need?

Levitra comes in strengths of 5, 10, and 20 milligrams. Physicians typically start patients at the lowest dose, and then titrate up as necessary if the patient feels that the lower dose is not working adequately. Patients should never try and adjust the dosage of Levitra on their own; this should only be done under the doctor's supervision.

Is Levitra Safe?

Levitra may cause complications in men who are over 65 years old, have liver or kidney problems, or are taking certain medications. A physician will be able to determine whether Levitra is an appropriate and safe treatment option for patients.
