DYI Interior Decorating Basics

Tuesday, September 29, 2015

If you've got a little money and an eye for detail, you can decorate your home or office like a pro without breaking the bank. All it takes is some creativity and a few tips from professionals in the business. There are three basic principles to interior decorating:

1. Mood

2. Style

3. Functionality

Mood has to do a lot with the color scheme you choose. The right tones and colors can open up a space, create a relaxing atmosphere or energize you. Style is about your taste and personality. Your rooms should reflect you without being an overpowering presence. Functionality relates to the purpose of the room you're decorating, and how the elements within the room interact with the interior environment.

Tying the Elements Together

Each room should have a focal point, whether it's an architectural feature, like a fireplace or decorative window, or a piece of furniture. Every other element in the room should compliment that focal point, or contrast it in an interesting way. Lighting and color will create an atmosphere. You can use a color as a backdrop to showcase your focal point, and strategically placed lighting to change the overall feel of the space.

Style comes into play with the decorative features you place in the room, and how you place them. You can use personal items, buy something new, or look around at antique shops or thrift stores for pieces that reflect your personality. The most unique interiors come from combining a little of each, but try to avoid overkill. You want to populate your world with interesting objects and colors without overwhelming the senses.

Aside from local shops, thrift stores and supply houses, you can find a lot of unique home decorating tips and supplies online. This will broaden your sources for innovative ideas, and you can often find one-of-a-kind or rare items that are unavailable locally. Try to get one or two major purchases that are of good quality, and then augmenting them with a lot of little, inexpensive touches.

Browse widely online to find good suppliers and online shops. Reading Balsam Hill reviews is one example of how easy it is to check out an online company before give them your business. Working with a reputable supplier is one way to make sure that you get high-quality merchandise. After all, home decorating is about enriching your environment and making your home or office a beautiful, pleasant place to live or work. Just make sure that you're dealing with a trusted source.
